Once Upon a Time Couples

Yesterday, Once aired its second episode of its fifth Season. However, there are still several questions that need to be answered; why does Emma give into the darkness? How does Regina lose the dagger? But, we also are eager to find out what will happen to our beloved otps. Here is what we know so far concerning some of our favorite Once couples:

Captain Swan

Emma Swan will truly accept the Dark One title by the end of the Camelot adventure. In President Day she will trying to reunite the Dark One dagger with the legendary sword. With that said, Hook has a lot on his plate in order to save the woman he loves. True Love’s kiss can not work unless Emma feels cursed–she simply needs to not desire the power. Easier said than done, it appears that our beloved Savior has turned dark or at least likes the taste of power.

“I think Dark Ones give into their darkest impulses and they are capable of love. But it’s about the choices they make and the things that they do in pursuit of the things that they want,” Adam Horowitz, “Once Upon a Time” co-creator, dished to Entertainment Tonight.

Hook and Emma will be tested this season, there is no doubt about that. SPOILERS: season 5 will go deeper into Hook’s past and I am eager to find out more about the handsome pirate.

“Well, that’s an interesting thing to talk about because Hook is a person who has had much darkness in him. And he has been around for hundreds of years battling that, and he has spent a large portion of that trying to kill a Dark One,” he dished to the publication.

However, will Hook risk allowing his own darkness to consume him in order to be with Emma? And has Emma completely given into the dark side or can Killian save her?

Rumbelle

Rumple is in a coma, but the writers promised that it wouldn’t be for long. I think that Mr. Gold will wake up by the end of fourth episode titled “The Broken Kingdom” and be up and about by the fifth titled “Dreamcatcher”. The problem isn’t when Rumple will awake but how he will take it. Belle has so far been by his side while he has been in his coma state, eager to help him, and dedicated to his health. That does not change the fact that there is still a lot of thing that have happened between them.

“Belle cares about what’s happening to Gold/Rumple right now, but that doesn’t mean that all is forgiven and everything that happened before doesn’t need to be dealt with. It does,” Horowitz has said.

I think that Rumple truly does love Belle. We have seen Rumple protect Belle, fight his darkness for her, and desire her happiness. Yes, Rumple has fallen countless times, and yes he has done terrible unforgivable things–but that doesn’t make him evil. If anything, Emma turning into the DO has proven how hard fighting the dark impulses can be.

Eddy Kitsis told yahoo: “We’ll probably see Belle reacting to that and all her issues with Gold,” Horowitz continued. “What he has done has to be put aside for this more important issue of how do we save him? And if we do save him, if we do wake him up, what is he? Who is he? Now that the darkness has been stripped away, what kind of person is he and how can their relationship move forward. Their relationship isn’t over, it’s growing and changing and evolving.”

I do think that the two will have a hard time getting over their differences, but whatever Rumple’s fate is will depend on how he takes not being the DO anymore. It isn’t certain with a character like Mr. Gold if he will find a way to regain his former title–you never know. Also, his thirst and lust for power is too strong to simply vanish so we will probably see him struggle to find a way to regain any abilities he once had.

Outlaw Queen

Regina and Robin have a complicated relationship–you know Robin slept with Regina’s evil sister, no big deal, right? Robin is the key to Regina’s goodness, much like Belle, and Emma who was the key to Hook’s. That doesn’t mean that our villain turned heroes are only good because of their love for good people. Regina truly wants to be a better person, but a life of constant self doubt is pretty hard to break.

Regina will need Robin this season, there is no doubt about that. I think it will be interesting to see them in Camelot. I personally enjoyed their dancing season in the second episode. There still is the problem of Zelena’s baby. Zelena dd state she would rather vanish with her unborn child than raise it with Robin, but Robin has proven to care about his duty and honor so I think he will want to have a life with his new child.

Snowing

The Charmings have a lot to deal with–their oldest child has turned into the DO. Ironic, or is it simply karma for all the times they bashed on Rumple? Anyways, Snow will be the one to have the most effect, I think, from what the second episode has shown. It was also Snow who had the vision of teen Emma crushing her heart, it is safe to say that this is Snow’s most feared nightmare.

How the couple will handle the situation is evidently clear. Snow didn’t hesitate to take out the dagger on her daughter during the premier, and feared her child turning dark so much she was willing to risk her own goodness–yup I feel you mama Maleficent. While the series began by establishing Snow’s goodness it is safe to say that Charming has proven to be the main force of moral reason between the two.

LGBT Couple?

There isn’t any confirmation that Mulan and Merida are the couple that will break the heterosexual norm on the show, but it does seem to be heading that way with the news that they were filming together. I personally don’t like stereotypes so I would wish that Merida wasn’t gay simply because she fits the “usual” description. I would like to see Ruby hanging out with Mulan. Yes we have only seen Ruby with men, but people are much more complicated and less one sided. Sexuality is layered and complex it isn’t a ridged one answered math question.

Stay turned for more news!

  1. Thanks for mentioning Swan Queen, which is a HUGE ship of the show. This goes to show you just how heternormative this can be, even if Swan Queen beat Captain Swan, doubling the votes fyi in a recent poll online. I don’t think the representation we need is new characters and background characters that are probably gonna be there for three episodes.

  2. I love RumBelle (pre-season 4), and that’s the only RumBelle my heart will acknowledge, but seriously, your write up for RumBelle in this article needs help. Your article says, “Belle has so far been by his side while he has been in his coma state, eager to help him, and dedicated to his health. ” *WRONG!!!* NewBelle (OOC Belle), who showed up in season 4 and remains because Adam and Eddy want to destroy RumBelle to puff up CaptainSwan, left Rumple only ONE DAY after he became comatose, so she go on an adventure with her popular friends, leaving Rumple alone if he died, and alone if he woke up and needed help. She was gone for SIX WEEKS. Six weeks Rumple laid on a cot in the back of his shop with nobody taking care of him, even though before he lost consciousness Belle promised to stay. Belle came back and let Regina yell at her comatose husband, and then Belle went out drinking with one of Rumple’s worse enemies, Hook, who tried to kill her FOUR times, and trash talked her husband, Rumple. So, Belle has been “by his side” at most a day and a half, while Rumple has been in a coma for 6 weeks. And the writers disrespected the iconic rose jar, using it to just notify Belle if Rumple died, while she was on her adventure, but she still may not have been able to get back to him on time… and then, she just leaves the rose jar to go dancing. As for the line about Belle not having forgiven Rumple, at this point, since she abused him with the dagger and cheated on him, she should beg for forgiveness of him, because she has wronged him far more than Rumple, the man who saved her life multiple times and died for her, ever wronged her while he was traumatized and cursed. Oh, and though in the latest episode, Belle minimizes what the curse did to Rumple, being nasty about it, instead of being with her comatose husband, she conveniently forgets all the rotten stuff that she did while she was cursed by Regina, and Rumple has forgiven everything she’s done without hesitation. I suggest for future articles, if you do any on OUAT, that you ignore what the creators say in interviews and find out what actually happened on the show.
